Notes, 1827-1828, extracted from lectures on surgery given by Valentine Mott at Rutgers Medical College and personal and business letters received, 1841-1853 and undated, together with a letter, 1857, sent to another family member (Ward's daughter?) and letters, 1842, 1844 and 1846, sent by Ward and his sister( -in-law?) to Ward's wife Mary. The correspondence pertains to weather conditions, Ward's business interests in New Jersey and elsewhere, favors sought, the spiritual and physical health of family members and friends, deaths of acquaintances, letters and visits requested or received and Ward's medical practice. A forced marriage and the purchase of a fancy piano are also covered. Ward's correspondents resided variously at Albany, New York City, Bloomfield, Reading, Philadelphia and Baltimore.

Mott, Valentine, 1785-1865

Valentine Mott was an American surgeon and medical professor in New York City. He graduated from Columbia College, where he later became a professor of surgery; he also had a very successful private practice. He spent 1834-1841 in Europe. Upon returning to New York he joined the faculty of the new medical department of the University of the City of New York, now the New York University School of Medicine.
